Long believed to be one of the most haunted places in the country, Dudleytown (which is actually a part of the township of Cornwall, Connecticut) is named after three Dudley brothers who moved there from England a few years after the area was settled in 1745.  The curse of Dudleytown began long before the brothers came; in 1510, Edmund Dudley was beheaded for plotting to overthrow King Henry VIII of England.  At the time, a curse was allegedly placed on the Dudleys, stating all of Edmund Dudley’s posterity would find themselves surrounded by horrors.  Legend has it the three brothers brought the curse with them from England to Dudleytown when they came. 

Soon after the brothers settled the area, tragedy began to befall the residents.  In 1774, an unidentified epidemic struck a household in Dudleytown, killing the entire family.  Another resident, Nathaniel Carters, along with his wife and infant were murdered by Indians while their other three children were kidnapped.  One of Dudleytown’s most famous residents, General Heman Swift (who served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War) lost his wife when she was struck by lightning and killed instantly.  Shortly after her death, the General was said to have gone “slightly demented.”  One of the most bizarre incidents in Dudleytown occurred near the end of the 1800s when John Brophy’s wife died of consumption and shortly after his two children mysteriously disappeared in the woods (some claim they were running from the law after they were accused of stealing sleigh robes).  Soon after the Brophy house burned to the ground and there was speculation of what actually started the blaze – if it was John Brophy himself or something far more sinister.
 
Today, the area of Dudleytown looks much like it did back in the 18th century; it sits in the shadow of three mountains in the middle of a thick, dense forest and rough, rocky terrain.  In fact, the forest was nicknamed “Dark Entry Forest” because the area was so dense and received such little sunlight.  Visitors claim to have experienced strange happenings such as hearing bizarre noises, seeing unexplainable lights, and even seeing strange dark shadows or creatures rumored to hide in old house ruins and chase out visitors.  Devil worshipping and other sinister rituals have been known to take place there as well.  Whether these occurrences are supernatural or not, Dudleytown is definitely an eerie, bizarre place that you probably shouldn’t visit alone!
